Making the leap to VR, AR, MR and XR at BurningMan 2020 - Enter the Multiverse

Making the leap to VR, AR, MR and XR at BurningMan 2020 - Enter the Multiverse

Some people may wonder, can life in the virtual world replicate life in the real world? and if so, to what extent will this be relevant in the future? How can we communicate our emotions and experience real connection with a virtual avatar?

As a digital nomad wearing my 360 photo / video creator hat, I peered through the lens and took an extremely deep dive into the vortex of Virtual Reality this COVID19 lockdown.

I spent the last 2 weeks living in the Multiverse, participating in this years Burningman2020. Reconnecting with my Burner artists and friends. Reliving memories on the playa from last year, practicing spiritual healing, embracing the culture and celebrating life.

My favorite part of the burn is build week because we get to exercise the power of collaboration with some of the worlds most unique and talented creative artists. Experimenting with light, sound, architecture, space and art through interactive installations with an international community.

I created an 3D model avatar a.k.a TinyLifeHacker [Wind] (doesn't look anything like me, yet, but did the job) and teleported through 50+ worlds interacting with virtual art models, sharing burner adventure stories with other avatars, listening to DJ's spin unique sounds in simulated environments whilst experiencing a virtual euphoria together.

Drawing from my memories of our ArunaFire camp last year, I successfully created my first 3D model / world of camp @TinyHackerHouse. I also hosted a gathering, gave a talk, sharing ideas about my work building resilient artist communities for the past 10 years and current campaign to build a tinyhouse live / work community in Austin, TX

On Saturday I watched the ManBurn followed by TempleBurn on Sunday both in the virtual world and live streamed in the real world simultaneously while flying 1,000ft in the sky speculating future possibilities.

I remember meeting Robert Scoble in the Flying Saucer and teaching him configure his Oculus Quest to fly (even though I was in 2D since I didn't own one) while chasing our group from a secret room to the dance floor.

So the answer is Yes! XR is here to stay! The question remains, once you're in, will the real world be enough? That's it for now, time to decompress...

Looking forward to hosting many more virtual events, collaborations and building our physical community space in parallel.
